English
This study analyzed sediment cores from natural and restored mangroves, seagrass beds, and tidal flats in South China, integrating diagenetic modeling and isotope analysis. It found that restored sites have lower carbon accumulation rates than natural ones, and that hydrogeomorphic settings are more critical than species choice. The results provide a process-based foundation for improving the climate credibility of blue carbon restoration.

In the global GX context
This paper contributes to the global science of nature-based climate solutions by providing empirical evidence on blue carbon restoration effectiveness. It underscores the need to align restoration strategies with local hydrogeomorphic settings, which is relevant for countries investing in coastal carbon sinks under frameworks like the Paris Agreement.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Blue carbon ecosystems contain disproportionately large carbon stocks and have therefore become priority targets for ecological restoration. Yet long-term effectiveness of restoration remains uncertain because species choice and hydrogeomorphic settings are rarely evaluated together in relation to C and N sequestration. Here, we analyzed sediment C and N accumulation in 90 cores from natural and restored mangroves, seagrass beds, and tidal flats across estuarine and open-coast settings in South China, integrating an organic matter diagenetic model, multi-decadal dating, and stable-isotope source apportionment. These results provide a process-based basis for aligning species selection and restoration priorities with local hydrogeomorphic conditions, thereby improving the climate credibility of blue carbon restoration practice and policy.
