English

This study develops an integrated carbon–cost optimization framework combining BIM, LCA, life cycle costing, and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) for sustainable construction evaluation. BIM-extracted material quantities are linked with emission factors and cost data to quantify embodied and operational carbon alongside initial and life-cycle costs. MCDM systematically ranks alternatives balancing carbon reduction and economic performance, with sensitivity analysis testing robustness under varying criterion weights. The framework supports low-carbon material selection and cost management at the planning and design stages.

In the global GX context

Construction is a major source of Scope 3 emissions, and this BIM-LCA-MCDM framework offers a practical method for integrating carbon and cost at the design stage, aligning with ISSB/CSRD disclosure expectations for embodied carbon and transition planning. It adds to global scholarship on decision-support tools for low-carbon construction and can inform TCFD-aligned scenario analysis in the built environment.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The construction industry faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining project affordability and long-term economic performance. This study develops an integrated carbon–cost optimization framework combining Building Information Modelling (BIM), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) for sustainable construction project evaluation. BIM is used to extract material quantities and project data, which are integrated with carbon emission factors and cost information to quantify life-cycle environmental and economic impacts. Alternative construction scenarios are evaluated by considering embodied carbon, operational carbon, initial construction cost, life-cycle cost, energy performance, and other relevant project criteria. An MCDM approach is applied to systematically assess the alternatives and identify solutions that achieve an effective balance between carbon reduction and economic performance. Sensitivity analysis is further employed to examine the robustness of the decision-making outcomes under variations in criterion weights. The integrated framework provides a structured decision-support approach for comparing construction alternatives at the project planning and design stages. The study demonstrates how BIM-enabled environmental and economic assessment can support informed material selection, cost management, and low-carbon construction strategies. The research contributes to sustainable construction management by integrating carbon and cost considerations within a unified decision-making framework and provides practical support for project managers, cost professionals, designers, and other stakeholders pursuing economically viable low-carbon construction.
