English

A large online RCT tests how carbon taxes shape consumer choices. Higher taxes generally cut high-carbon demand, but versus an import tax, a carbon tax reduces demand when announced at zero yet yields relatively higher high-carbon demand once levied. The gap concentrates among climate-concerned consumers, suggesting carbon taxes can crowd out climate concerns—key for policy design.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As jurisdictions expand carbon pricing under ISSB/CSRD disclosure regimes, this shows price signals alone may backfire among climate-conscious consumers, informing how carbon pricing interacts with transition policy and consumer-facing decarbonization narratives.

📄 Abstract(原文)

We examine the impact of a carbon tax on consumer choices via a large-scale online randomized controlled trial. Higher taxes generally reduce the demand for high-carbon goods. Compared to an import tax, a carbon tax reduces demand when the tax is zero (i.e., announced but not levied) but leads to relatively higher demand for high-carbon goods when a positive tax is introduced. This difference in demand responses, despite identical prices, is concentrated among climate-concerned consumers. Our findings suggest that carbon taxes can crowd out the effect of climate concerns on consumer choices, with important implications for policy.
