English
A systematic review of renewable-energy microgrids for rural electrification in Nigeria, covering solar, wind, small hydro, biogas and battery storage. It maps resource endowment and policy opportunities against barriers such as fragmented regulation, financing gaps and limited technical capacity. Solar PV microgrid LCOE of USD 0.18-0.32/kWh is shown to undercut diesel-only generation and grid extension beyond 50 km. The paper closes with a policy, financing and institutional roadmap toward universal rural electrification by 2030.

In the global GX context
Adds a Global South empirical case to the energy-access and just-transition literature that sits alongside TCFD/ISSB disclosure debates on transition planning in emerging markets. The LCOE benchmarking of microgrids versus diesel and grid extension is useful comparative evidence for blended-finance and climate-finance structuring.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Rural electrification is still one of the most serious and intractable development issues facing Nigeria, a country with a rich source of renewable energy sources and a high rate of energy access gap in the world. About 86 million Nigerians, who mostly dwell in rural and peri-urban settings, in the North-East and the North-West geopolitical zones lack access to dependable electricity, which continues to ensure poverty, limit agricultural output, weaken the focus on healthcare services, and slows the pace of industrial progress. Microgrids based on renewable energy that combine solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, small hydro, biogas, and battery energy storage technologies into geographically distributed, autonomous power systems locally have become the technically viable and economically competitive modality of providing reliable electricity to the geographically remote rural populations that cannot be served by conventional grid extension. The paper is a detailed scholarly review article of the prospects and challenges of the implementation of microgrids on renewable energy to electrify rural Nigerians. The endowment of renewable resources in the country is monitored in a systematic manner; the major potentials of the country include high solar irradiation (4.2-6.2 kWh/m2/day), high wind potential in the north of Nigeria, large agricultural biomass residues, and new opportunities of policy and regulations. At the same time, the main threats, such as disjointed regulatory control, severe financial limitations, limited local technical knowledge, supply chain, and poor institutional structures, are under close scrutiny. A cost-effective comparative analysis of solar PV-based microgrids shows that the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is USD 0.18-0.32/kWh, which is the most cost-effective electrification route of remote communities in Nigeria compared to diesel-only generation (USD 0.35-0.62/kWh) and traditional grid extension over distances longer than 50 km (USD 0.28-0.55/kWh). Lastly, the study provides a strategic roadmap of policy interventions, financing mechanisms, and institutional reforms needed to harness the microgrids of renewable energy to provide universal rural electrification in Nigeria by 2030.
