English
This paper analyzes patent activity in low-carbon technologies to examine China's leadership in the global energy transition. It finds that China's rise is driven more by export strategies and demand from the Global North than by climate concerns. However, China's leadership is limited to conventional renewables, green building, and EV, while Europe leads in breakthrough industrial decarbonization.

📄 Abstract(原文)
The energy transition is shaping up to be an economic revolution. For countries dependent on hydrocarbon imports, the transition to low-carbon development technologies has become not only a factor in energy supply, energy security, economic growth, and environmental protection, but also an influence on global markets. To study this influence and the prospects for global economic modernization, we analyzed patent activity in low-carbon technologies by country. Patent statistics show that while the Global North was the driving force behind the energy transition in previous years, leadership in many low-carbon technologies has now shifted to China. However, an analysis of the subject of innovation suggests that decarbonization in China is more likely a result of an expansionist foreign trade strategy and increased demand from the Global North for green economy products than a response to climate change. At the same time, the peculiarities of China's state political and economic centralization limit its leadership to a number of already conventional renewable energy, green building, and electric transport technologies, leaving the lead in breakthrough low-carbon modernization of industrial sectors and global market infrastructure to European countries. However, it is precisely thanks to China that the flywheel of the energy transition is turning, making the benefits of a low-carbon economy more accessible to developing countries and changing the structure of global markets.
