Using 1990–2023 Italian data, the study applies ARDL bounds testing to examine long- and short-run links among fossil fuel use, electricity demand, FDI, GDP, innovation, and renewables. It tests whether renewables statistically displace fossil fuels and whether innovation reduces energy dependence. Policy recommendations emphasize coordinated innovation subsidies, grid investment, carbon pricing, and green-aligned FDI screening.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This paper examines the long- and short-run interrelations among fossil fuel consumption, electricity consumption, foreign direct investment (FDI), real gross domestic product (GDP), innovation (INNOV), and renewable energy (RE) in Italy using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing framework. Motivated by Italy’s energy transition and decarbonization commitments, we formulate two complementary energy–economy models: (i) an electricity-demand model in which electricity consumption depends on economic activity, fossil fuel use, FDI, innovation, and renewable energy; and (ii) a fossil-fuel substitution model in which fossil fuel consumption depends on GDP, electricity demand, FDI, innovation, and renewable energy. Annual data (1990–2023) from international statistical sources allow for mixed orders of integration I(0)/I(1), while preserving small-sample properties. We test for cointegration using the bounds F-statistic, estimate long-run coefficients and short-run error-correction dynamics, and implement extensive diagnostics, stability checks (CUSUM/CUSUMSQ), and robustness via alternative innovation proxies and dynamic ARDL simulations. The empirical blueprint provided here can quantify (a) whether renewable energy statistically displaces FFs, (b) whether innovation alleviates electricity and fossil dependence, and (c) how FDI and GDP condition the energy mix. Policy implications emphasize coordinated instruments—such as innovation subsidies, grid investments, carbon pricing, and FDI screening aligned with green objectives—to accelerate Italy’s transition without compromising growth.
