English

This study assesses bio-binders for NZ and Australian roads under dynamic carbon pricing (NZ ETS, Safeguard Mechanism), simulating 122,400+ scenarios with ML. Biogenic carbon cuts initial manufacturing emissions, but long-term economics hinge on road class and upfront capex. Maximising biocontent without climate-specific rheological tuning causes premature pavement failure, erasing procurement gains via maintenance carbon penalties.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD push infrastructure firms to disclose embodied and maintenance-phase emissions, this work shows carbon pricing must be integrated with engineering durability—otherwise low-carbon procurement backfires financially. It offers a template for transition-finance-backed material substitution in road networks.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The global imperative to decarbonise transport infrastructure necessitates replacing petroleum based bitumen with sustainably sourced biobinders. This research presents a comprehensive technoeconomic and environmental assessment evaluating biobinders across New Zealand and Australian road networks under dynamic carbon pricing frameworks, including the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme and the Australian Safeguard Mechanism. By integrating mechanistic empirical pavement deterioration models, EN15804 modular life cycle assessments, and dynamic life cycle costing, this study generated and analysed over 122,400 simulated scenarios. Machine learning algorithms reveal that while biobinders leverage biogenic carbon sequestration to significantly reduce initial manufacturing emissions, long term project economics are overwhelmingly dictated by foundational civil engineering parameters, specifically road classification and upfront capital expenditure. Crucially, the modular analysis proves that maximising bulk biocontent without rigorous climate specific rheological tuning triggers premature pavement failure. This failure generates severe maintenance carbon penalties that financially erase all initial sustainable procurement gains. Transitioning to biobinders provides essential fiscal resilience only when chemical formulations structurally align with localised climate stressors.
