English

This study empirically analyzes the relationship between digital lifestyle intensity and consumption-based CO2 emissions using survey and transaction data from about 6,000 Swedish adults. It tests whether digitalization reduces emissions through dematerialization or increases them through rebound effects, using category decomposition to disentangle the two mechanisms.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

日本のGX政策では、デジタル化と脱炭素の両立が注目されるが、個人レベルの実証は乏しい。本研究成果は、日本のデジタル社会実現に向けた政策や企業のサービス設計に示唆を与える。

In the global GX context

Globally, this study contributes to the debate on digitalization and climate change by providing individual-level evidence linking digital lifestyles to consumption-based emissions, which is relevant for designing effective climate policies and understanding rebound effects.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Digitalization is reshaping how time and money are spent, with contested implications for house- holds’ behaviour and carbon footprint. One literature expects dematerialization and demobi- lization: digital services substitute for physical goods, travel, and out-of-home activities, low- ering consumption-based emissions. A second expects rebound and induced demand : time and money freed by digital activity flow back into consumption, and digital channels (e-commerce, streaming, targeted marketing) actively generate new demand, raising emissions. Existing evi- dence is dominated by top-down ICT-sector footprints and stated-preference or time-use studies; individual-level evidence linking directly measured digital lifestyle intensity to a comprehensive consumption-based carbon footprint is scarce. This study combines survey-measured digital lifestyle intensity, cardinally anchored in device-reported screen time, with transaction-based consumption-level CO2e for approximately 6,000 Swedish adults. Because both accounts may operate simultaneously and partially offset each other in the total, the adjudicating test is the category decomposition (RQ2) rather than the net gradient alone (RQ1).
