English

This study quantified blue carbon stocks in mangroves across three barangays of Dapitan City, Philippines, using sediment coring and allometric equations. Sediment carbon dominated the ecosystem pool, with a combined stock of roughly 14.8 million MgC/ha. Mangrove extent strongly drove total carbon, offering a barangay-level baseline for conservation zoning and national blue carbon policy.

In the global GX context

Blue carbon is increasingly recognized under global climate frameworks (IPCC wetlands guidance, voluntary carbon markets, and nature-related disclosure via TNFD). This paper adds a replicable barangay-level accounting method from a data-scarce Southeast Asian context, useful for emerging blue carbon methodologies and ecosystem-based mitigation claims.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Mangrove ecosystems are among the most carbon-rich coastal habitats, providing significant climate regulation through long-term carbon sequestration, particularly in belowground sediments. Quantifying blue carbon stocks is essential for establishing baseline data that can support conservation planning, ecosystem-based management, and emerging climate mitigation frameworks. This study assessed ecosystem carbon stocks and potential vulnerability to carbon loss in selected mangrove barangays of Dapitan City, namely Philippines – namely Oro (8°40'57.7"N, 123°26'55.5"E), Baylimango (8°42'10.3"N, 123°26'44.2"E), and Tag-ulo (8°43'23.2"N, 123°22'53.0"E). Soil organic carbon was quantified through sediment coring, depth profiling, and analysis using the Walkley-Black colorimetric method. In contrast, vegetative carbon stocks were estimated through mangrove species identification, diameter at breast height measurements, and established allometric equations. Three dominant mangrove species were recorded: Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, and Sonneratia alba. Results showed that sediment carbon represented the largest ecosystem pool, with a total stock of 14,027,216.52 MgC/ha, compared with 768,922.68 MgC/ha stored in aboveground vegetation. The combined blue carbon stock across study sites was estimated at 14,796,139.20 MgC/ha. Larger mangrove extent contributed substantially to total carbon pools, emphasizing that ecosystem-scale climate benefits depend on both carbon density and spatial coverage. While carbon stock estimates indicate the potential risk of carbon release under disturbance scenarios, actual emissions outcomes remain context-dependent. Overall, Dapitan City’s mangroves represent an important blue carbon reservoir, providing a barangay-level baseline that can inform local conservation zoning, coastal resource management, and potential integration into national blue carbon and climate policy initiatives.
