📄 Abstract(原文)
Environmental degradation and climate change have become major challenges for developing economies due to rapid economic activities, increasing energy demand, and tourism expansion. In Sri Lanka, tourism and energy consumption play an important role in economic growth while also contributing to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. This research examines the relationship among Energy Consumption, Tourism Arrivals, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and CO₂ emissions during the period from 1990 to 2022. The study applies the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach to identify both short-run and long-run relationships among the variables. The Error Correction Model (ECM) is also used to measure the speed of adjustment toward long-run equilibrium. The findings indicate that energy consumption has a significant positive impact on CO₂ emissions, confirming that heavy dependence on fossil fuels increases environmental degradation. In contrast, tourism arrivals and foreign direct investment demonstrate negative long-run relationships with CO₂ emissions, implying that sustainable tourism development and environmentally friendly investments can support environmental improvement. GDP shows an insignificant relationship with CO₂ emissions in the long run, providing limited evidence for the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The results highlight the importance of promoting renewable energy, green tourism practices, and eco-friendly investment policies to achieve sustainable economic growth while reducing environmental risks in Sri Lanka.
