English

This chapter examines how AI is reshaping materiality assessment in sustainability reporting. AI can surface patterns, risks and impacts missed by conventional review, helping detect selective disclosure and greenwashing, while raising concerns about algorithmic bias, opacity and over-reliance. It proposes a framework for AI-assisted materiality assessment that preserves meaningful human oversight while supporting transparency and accountability.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD and SEC climate rules push materiality toward greater rigor, AI-assisted assessment speaks directly to greenwashing enforcement and assurance debates. The proposed human-oversight framework adds to global disclosure-infrastructure scholarship on how automation can support—not replace—judgment.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Materiality determines what information an organisation must disclose in financial and sustainability reporting. Traditionally, such assessments relied on human judgement and fixed thresholds. However, AI is reshaping this process by identifying patterns, risks and impacts that may remain unnoticed through conventional review. This is especially relevant to ESG reporting, where corporate discretion may lead to selective disclosure, omission, or greenwashing. This chapter examines AI's potential as a forensic tool for identifying inconsistencies, misleading claims and hidden sustainability risks. It also considers the risks of algorithmic bias, opacity and over-reliance on automated outputs. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the chapter connects accounting principles, and sustainability-reporting frameworks. It proposes a framework for AI-assisted materiality assessment that supports transparency and accountability while preserving meaningful human oversight.
