English

This paper examines public acceptance of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation using a cross-sectional survey across four European regions. It finds skepticism about NBS benefits is the main barrier, while trust in authorities and exposure to environmental hazards increase positive attitudes. Valuing environmental quality and expecting authority responsibility are strongest predictors.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This European study offers cross-national evidence on public acceptance of NBS, relevant to global climate adaptation efforts. Findings on trust and skepticism can inform communication strategies for NBS implementation worldwide, including in ISSB/TCFD contexts where social acceptance affects adaptation planning.

Provides empirical model of NBS acceptance across European regions, useful for comparative social science research on climate adaptation.

Offers insights for designing public engagement strategies for NBS projects, emphasizing trust-building and benefit communication.

Highlights the role of institutional trust and environmental values in shaping public support for adaptation policies.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Negative public attitudes are a major barrier to the adoption of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), and there is little cross-national evidence on the factors behind these attitudes. This paper investigates the individual values, perceptions, and behaviours behind public acceptance of NBS in Europe, using a cross-sectional, representative survey across four European regions. We found scepticism of NBS benefits to be the key factor behind negative attitudes towards NBS. Higher levels of trust in authorities or exposure to environmental hazards increase the positive attitudes and offset the negative effect of scepticism on NBS acceptance. While the sociodemographic and health-related factors played a marginal role in acceptance, valuing environmental quality and expecting the authorities to take more responsibility for reducing environmental risks were the strongest predictors of positive attitudes towards NBS.
