English

This study examines the durability of soilcrete made with low-carbon binders (slag-rich CEM III/C, CEM VI, CEM III/A-MK) in silty soil. Accelerated carbonation showed competing effects: higher binder content increases carbonatable phases and densifies microstructure, while slag-rich binders have higher carbonation coefficients due to lower alkalinity. In sulfate-rich soils, lower-clinker binders improved sulfate resistance, but higher dosages increased expansion when sulfates were present. Soilcrete durability cannot be directly predicted from conventional concrete behavior.

📄 Abstract(原文)

ABSTRACT This study investigates the durability of soilcrete, a highly porous cementitious soil-based material, incorporating low-carbon binders including slag-rich CEM III/C, CEM VI (clinker-slag-limestone), and CEM III/A-MK (clinker-slag-metakaolin) at different binder dosages with a silty soil. Due to its porous microstructure, soilcrete is more sensitive to environmental exposure than conventional concrete. Carbonation was assessed under accelerated conditions (0.4% CO 2 ), revealing that increasing binder content simultaneously raises the amount of carbonatable phases and densifies the microstructure, resulting in competing effects on carbonation kinetics. Slag-rich binders exhibited higher carbonation coefficients, consistent with their lower alkalinity and lower buffering capacity. In sulfate-rich or contaminated soils, binders with reduced clinker content showed improved sulfate resistance owing to the lower overall availability of C 3 A-bearing clinker phases, whereas higher binder dosages increased expansion when sulfates were already present within the matrix. These results highlight that the durability of soilcrete cannot be directly predicted based on the behavior of conventional concrete.
