The RSPB has created a set of resources which provide information and guidance for businesses on state of nature metric-related choices, primarily supporting the Locate phase of TNFD’s LEAP approach. The Step-by-step Walkthrough uses illustrative examples of hypothetical organisations within the mining, onshore wind energy, and agricultural sectors to demonstrate how biodiversity metrics can be chosen and analysed by an organisation to support completion of Locate components ‘L1-L4’ during a TNFD assessment. The examples presented analyse randomly selected sets of real-world industrial activity sites to create a hypothetical global footprint for each organisation. The learnings shared are not limited to any single region or country. The resources are also relevant to other industry sectors from those specifically demonstrated and could also be applied to meet the requirements of other nature-related standards and frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN). The Summary of Metrics document provides background information on eleven commonly used nature-related matrics which could be used in the Locate phase. This resource aims to support organisations in their choice and use of metrics when screening operations sites for ecological sensitivity. The Attributes and Qualities of Metrics spreadsheet gives more detailed information regarding each metric.
