English
This study demonstrates that discarded rust can be used directly as a precursor for Fe-based catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation to light olefins, bypassing energy-intensive recycling. Rust samples from various environments matched or exceeded co-precipitated Fe2O3 performance; a K-modified optimal sample achieved 45.7% CO2 conversion and 46.0% light-olefin selectivity in hydrocarbons, stable over 100 hours. Performance depends strongly on trace environmental components—high Cl/S lowers activity, while Ni and phosphate suppress olefin formation.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Adds to the CCU/CO2-to-olefins literature by showing industrial waste (rust) can substitute for synthesized catalysts, lowering feedstock cost and embodied emissions. Relevant to circular-economy and industrial decarbonization discussions, though it remains lab-scale with limited direct disclosure or policy linkage.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Large amounts of rust are generated every year, but its utilization relies on the conventional high-temperature recycling, which often accompanied by considerable CO2 emissions. Herein, we demonstrate that the discarded rust can be directly used as the precursor for Fe-based catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation to produce light olefins. Rust samples collected from different environments display comparable or even better reaction performance than the synthesized Fe2O3 via the traditional co-precipitation method. After K modification through the impregnation, the optimal rust achieves a CO2 conversion of 45.7% with a light olefin selectivity of 46.0% in hydrocarbons and remains stable during the 100-hour test. Analysis of multiple rust samples reveals that the catalytic performance strongly depends on the trace components from environments. Higher Cl and S content will lead to low reactivity, while Ni and phosphate species can suppress the olefin formation. These results highlight the potential of the huge amount of rust as a practical Fe-based catalyst source and provide guidance for its selection and large-scale utilization.
