English
A cradle-to-gate LCA (ISO 14040/14044) of mortar with waste-paper nanocellulose (NC) made via low-temperature alkaline treatment, compared with plain mortar, cellulose fibre, and cellulose ash at 2% and 4% cement replacement. Lab-scale NC production emitted ~24 kg CO2-eq/kg (91% from electricity), making NC-2 mortar 41% more carbon-intensive than plain mortar. Industrial-scale production cut NC emissions to 2.21 kg CO2-eq/kg, letting NC-2 reach 21.80 kg CO2-eq·m⁻³·MPa⁻¹, 2.2% below plain mortar with 81% probability. Benefits hinge on scaling to ≤3.34 kg CO2-eq/kg and ≥29.5 MPa strength.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Nanocellulose (NC) derived from waste paper may partially replace cement in mortar, but its environmental performance remains uncertain. This study evaluates the cradle-to-gate impacts of mortar containing NC produced through low-temperature alkaline treatment (6% NaOH, 2% NaClO, 30–50°C), compared with plain mortar, untreated cellulose fibre (CF), and cellulose ash (CA) at 2% and 4% cement replacement by mass. Following ISO 14040/14044, two functional units were assessed: 1 m³ of mortar and 1 m³ per MPa of 28-day compressive strength. Mix-design data and compressive strengths from six cubes per mixture were analysed under laboratory and prospective industrial NC-production scenarios. Sensitivity analysis and 10,000-run Monte Carlo simulation assessed result robustness. Laboratory-scale NC production generated approximately 24 kg CO₂-eq/kg, with electricity accounting for 91% of emissions, making NC-2 mortar 41% more carbon-intensive than plain mortar. Industrial-scale production reduced NC emissions to 2.21 kg CO₂-eq/kg, enabling NC-2 to achieve 21.80 kg CO₂-eq·m⁻³·MPa⁻¹, 2.2% below plain mortar, with an 81% probability of being superior. NC-4, CA, and CF showed no eco-efficiency advantage because of their lower compressive strength; their carbon intensity remained higher even when additive burdens were excluded. These findings indicate that NC’s environmental benefits depend on scaling production to reduce emissions to ≤3.34 kg CO₂-eq/kg and achieving a compressive strength of at least 29.5 MPa for NC-2, a threshold exceeded by all six tested cubes.
