This paper proposes an operability-driven hybrid modelling framework that couples renewable generation profiles, electrolyser part-load behaviour, synthesis-loop flexibility, utility demand and delivery obligations on a single hourly time base. It treats yield assessment as an 8,760-hour timeseries rather than an annual scalar and proposes five operability metrics to sit alongside P50/P90. Citing evidence that fixed-efficiency assumptions overestimate hydrogen output by 5-24% and that greater synthesis-loop flexibility can cut storage needs by up to 84%, it argues yield assessment should be one input to integrated optimisation, not the primary basis of design.

国内では水素・アンモニアの大規模導入とGX推進が政策課題となる中、事業性評価(バンカビリティ)と供給安定性を両立させる評価手法として、金融機関・事業者のデューデリジェンス実務に示唆を与える。
In the global GX context
As green hydrogen and derivative projects scale under transition finance and bankability scrutiny, this work reframes yield assessment for molecule-based projects, complementing disclosure and project-finance frameworks that still rely on annual P50/P90 scalars.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Renewable energy yield assessments explore exceedance levels to understand the clean-energy generation capability of large-scale renewable power plants (typically P50 or P90 for project financing). Although resource seasonality, uncertainty and interannual variability are considered in conventional renewable projects, for project financing, the annual energy production figures tend to dominate the bankability assessment of projects. In green hydrogen projects, the renewable energy yields have a direct contribution to the overall bankability assessment of the facility. However, the intricacies of imbalances and system stability play a much larger role when the product is molecules rather than electrons. Therefore, although the traditional energy yield practice is sound for power projects, green hydrogen requires a more comprehensive and holistic assessment of the system and interdependencies to establish reassurance regarding the security of supply. This paper sets out why the practice took hold, what the annual figure conceals once a variable resource feeds a chemical plant, and how the gap can be closed. The contribution is an operability-driven hybrid modelling framework that couples renewable generation profiles, electrolyser part-load behaviour, synthesis-loop flexibility limits, utility demand and delivery obligations on a single hourly time base. The renewable resource assessment enters as a timeseries of 8,7601 hours rather than as an annual scalar. The paper presents the structure of the modelling framework itself rather than results for a specific development. Facility configurations, resource profiles and commercial obligations differ so widely between projects that scenario-specific numbers would not transfer, what transfers is the method and the metrics it produces. Published work supports the scale of the error being corrected: assuming fixed electrolyser efficiency overestimates hydrogen production by 5 to 24% under variable operation and understates the optimal plant size (Virah-Sawmy et al. 2024), while increasing ammonia synthesis-loop turndown flexibility to a level achievable with existing technology has been shown to cut the hydrogen storage requirement by up to 84% and the levelised cost of ammonia by 21 to 22% (Tully et al. 2025). A limited reproducible analysis demonstrates the method. It is built from public reanalysis and agency cost data for a generic coastal site, demonstrates the method across scenarios that reallocate flexibility between the renewable system, the buffer and the process is shown to provide an outline of how results may be portrayed and discussed. Five operability metrics are proposed to sit alongside P50 and P90 in the development deliverable set. The conclusion is deliberately narrow: renewable energy yield assessments should be regarded as one input to integrated optimisation, rather than the primary basis of design.
