This study models decarbonisation pathways for offshore wind installation vessels using real-world AIS-derived operational profiles integrated with vessel-specific characteristics. Comparing shore power, methanol, hydrogen, and hybrid propulsion across jack-up installation, offshore construction, and cable lay vessels, it finds decarbonisation potential varies by vessel class: construction vessels suit shore charging due to port time, while cable lay and jack-up vessels favor alternative fuels and hybrids. No single solution fits the fleet; tailored technology combinations maximize system-level reductions.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract This paper examines how different vessel decarbonisation pathways can reduce CO2 emissions from vessels supporting construction of offshore wind farm (OWF) infrastructure. Although electricity generated via offshore wind already has one of the lowest lifecycle carbon footprints of all electricity sources, vessel operations during construction remain a notable contributor, accounting for approximately 6% of total lifecycle GHG emissions depending on site distance from port (Ørsted 2026). This study assesses how three key vessel types, hereafter referred to as the Study Vessel Types (Jack-Up Installation Vessels, Offshore Construction Vessels, and Cable Lay Vessels), operational, and design constraints influence the feasibility and effectiveness of different decarbonisation strategies. The analysis applies a modelling approach using real-world vessel activity data from a representative OWF installation campaign. Automatic Identification System (AIS)-derived operational profiles are integrated with vessel-specific characteristics, including type, size, and engine configuration. Multiple decarbonisation pathways are evaluated, including shore power connection, methanol fuel, hydrogen fuel, and hybrid propulsion. Fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions are calculated across a range of operating states to quantify the impact of each pathway under realistic operating conditions. Results indicate that decarbonisation potential varies significantly across vessel classes due to differences in operational patterns and energy requirements. Offshore Construction Vessels spend a significant portion of their time in port, making them well suited for shore- based charging, creating the opportunity to achieve comparatively high emissions reductions. In contrast Cable Laying Vessels, and Jack-Up Installation Vessels operate for extended periods offshore and require substantial energy for dynamic positioning and construction activities, making alternative fuels and hybrid systems more suitable decarbonisation pathways. Analysis further suggests that different vessel categories contribute unequally to total vessel emissions, and their distinct decarbonisation pathways lead to varying overall emissions reduction outcomes. Consequently, no single solution is sufficient across the fleet; instead, a tailored combination of technologies is required to maximise system-level emissions reductions. This paper provides a data-driven, operationally grounded comparison of vessel decarbonisation pathways based on real-world OWF installation activity. It offers new insights into how vessel-specific constraints and operational profiles shape decarbonisation outcomes, highlighting the importance of differentiated strategies and improving the robustness of emissions modelling in carbon lifecycle assessments.
