English

This paper develops a structural adaptation of the hypothetical extraction method within an input-output framework to separate demand-side and supply-side interdependencies driving CO2 emissions. Applied to Spain's 2020 data, it reveals substantial heterogeneity across industries and distinct demand- versus supply-side emission profiles. The approach pinpoints structural channels of emissions and supports more targeted mitigation policies, including carbon taxation.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As global disclosure frameworks (CSRD, ISSB) push for Scope 3 and supply-chain transparency, this demand/supply decomposition offers a structural lens for attributing emissions across value chains and informing carbon pricing design.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of productive structure in determining carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by industry. The methodology is based on the input–output framework, with particular emphasis on the novel distinction between interdependencies arising from input demand and those resulting from the supply structure. We develop a structural adaptation of the hypothetical extraction method (HEM) to separate demand- and supply-side interdependencies and generate counterfactual scenarios through the selective removal of industries from the production system, allowing industries to be characterized according to their roles as input demanders and suppliers. The approach is applied to input–output data for Spain in 2020. The empirical findings reveal substantial heterogeneity across industries and distinct patterns in their demand- and supply-side emission profiles. The proposed approach provides a more precise characterization of the structural channels through which emissions are generated and identifies different industry profiles that may be relevant for mitigation strategies, thereby supporting the design of more targeted emission-reduction policies, including carbon taxation.
