There is currently a significant need to understand the macrofinancial and environmental implications of the green transition through country-specific scenario analysis. Due to this growing need, recent years have seen several calls for the development of country-specific models that can analyse these implications and guide the design of green policies. To contribute to the literature that is addressing this gap, this thesis develops a novel model for the UK that can analyse the impact of macroeconomic, financial, and regulatory policies aiming at achieving decarbonisation targets. Drawing on theoretical insights from post-Keynesian economics, the model is constructed by combining country-specific stock-flow consistent approaches with ecological macroeconomic modelling techniques. A key feature of the model is that it explicitly captures the macrofinancial feedback loops related to the green transition. The developed UK model is used to perform a medium-to-long-term scenario analysis of a variety of environmental policies, such as green subsidies, carbon pricing and regulation policies. Scenario results suggest that several trade-offs arise when policies are implemented in isolation. However, these trade-offs can be minimised when several policies are introduced simultaneously in the context of green policy mixes. The analysis also shows that financial constraints play a significant role in the effectiveness of environmental policies. On top of providing new insights into the macrofinancial and environmental implications of the green transition in the UK, the thesis also makes a methodological contribution: it provides a step-by-step framework for using accounting data to effectively develop ecological stock-flow consistent models that properly capture country-specific contexts. This framework can be applied for the development of stock-flow-consistent models for other countries, permitting a country-specific systems-based evaluation of the green transition from a macrofinancial and environmental perspective.
