Using Taiwan's PCR-compliant LCA, this study quantifies the cradle-to-grave carbon footprint of two automotive lubricants at ~1.45-1.46 kg CO2eq/kg, dominated by raw material acquisition. An eco-design switch to 100% recycled HDPE packaging cut total CF by 7.89% while maintaining performance. It recommends recycled materials, renewable electricity, and optimized base-oil sourcing as priority decarbonization levers.

In the global GX context

This adds a product-level, PCR-based CF case from Asia to the global disclosure literature, complementing TCFD/ISSB Scope 3 accounting and CSRD product-level expectations. The verified packaging eco-design offers a concrete, quantified Scope 3 reduction example for manufacturers.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Lubricants are essential for machinery, yet their production contributes significantly to climate change. Quantifying their carbon footprint (CF) is necessary to identify emission hotspots and to design effective decarbonization measures across the industry value chain. This study applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), following Taiwan’s Product Category Rules (PCR) for lubricants, to quantify and compare the CF of two representative automotive lubricant products and to propose an ecological packaging design, using a Functional Unit (FU) of 1 kg of lubricant. The automotive engine oils studied are designated LB5126777 and LB5168477, both manufactured by a leading Taiwanese manufacturer. We adopted a cradle-to-grave system boundary spanning raw material acquisition and manufacturing through distribution, use, and end-of-life. Results show that LB5126777 emits 1.463 kg CO₂eq/FU and LB5168477 emits 1.449 kg CO₂eq/FU. These emissions are driven overwhelmingly by raw material acquisition (1.364 kg CO₂ eq/FU for LB5126777 and 1.367 kg CO₂eq/FU for LB5168477). For LB5126777, an implemented and verified eco-design intervention that replaced conventional 1-L plastic packaging with 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (rHDPE) achieved a 7.89% reduction in the total carbon footprint while maintaining packaging technical performance. Accordingly, this study recommends reusing recycled materials that do not compromise technical performance, adopting renewable electricity, and optimizing base-oil sourcing as priority decarbonization strategies for automotive lubricant products.
