English

This paper quantitatively compares the embodied carbon of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) and Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) using a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (Modules A1–A3). Results show that CSEB reduces embodied carbon by 45–60% under equivalent structural conditions. Cement content is the dominant emission driver, and material substitution in low-rise construction can serve as a scalable climate mitigation strategy in tropical contexts.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As embodied carbon gains attention in global construction decarbonization, this study provides direct comparative data for two common masonry materials. The 45–60% reduction potential supports material substitution strategies advocated by initiatives like the World Green Building Council. The cradle-to-gate LCA methodology aligns with ISO 14040/14044 standards, useful for EPD development and Scope 3 reporting.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract - The construction industry accounts for nearly 37% of global energy-related carbon emissions, with embodied carbon emerging as a major contributor as operational emissions decline. Cement production alone contributes approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions, making cement-intensive materials such as Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) environmentally significant. This dissertation quantitatively compares the embodied carbon of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) and conventional Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) using a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment (Modules A1–A3). The functional unit is defined as 1 m² of 200 mm thick load-bearing wall. Results indicate that stabilized earth masonry reduces embodied carbon by approximately 45– 60% compared to concrete masonry under equivalent structural conditions. Cement content is identified as the dominant emission driver. The research demonstrates that material substitution in low-rise construction can serve as a scalable climate mitigation strategy in tropical contexts. Key Words: Keywords: embodied carbon, life cycle assessment (LCA), cradle-to-gate analysis, compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEB), concrete masonry units (CMU), cement production emissions, sustainable construction materials, low-carbon masonry, material substitution, climate change mitigation, tropical construction.
