📄 Abstract(原文)

There is growing evidence to suggest that most companies’ corporate carbon footprints are outweighed by their impacts across supply chain partners. Further, climate change poses significant new information asymmetries in form of physical and regulatory challenges and opportunities for businesses. Given pressing needs for businesses to address climate change in a substantial manner, in this research we ask how do companies engage their up and downstream supply chain partners in climate change mitigation? Grounded in organisation information processing theory (OPIT) and using rich data from the CDP’s Climate Change Supply Chain Survey, we find that while companies’ chief information uncertainty behind their engagement strategies relates to accurately measuring their scope 3 emissions in the first instance, effectively interpreting and managing this information equivocality becomes a subsequent priorty. Further, OIPT provides a valuable lens for characterising information flows and utilisation in climate change engagement. Our findings suggest that information processing within supply chains occurs through a sequence which is largely identical across suppliers but varies depending on the level of proactiveness from buyers. Our paper therefore contributes to knowledge on the significance of inter-organisational information processesing in addressing important sustainability outcomes and performance. An improved understanding of how companies engage with their supply chain partners will help overcoming increasingly complex information uncertainty and equivocality.
