Using an averaged inventory from 60 silage maize producers in Malatya-Battalgazi, Türkiye, the study integrates carbon, soil N₂O and green-blue-grey water footprints within one system boundary via IPCC Tier 1 and the Water Footprint Assessment Manual. Carbon footprint was 4,533 kg CO₂e/ha (78.8 kg CO₂e/t), with soil N₂O (38.9%), urea manufacture (17.6%) and irrigation electricity (15.5%) dominant. Total water footprint was 180.9 m³/t, 60% blue; a 20% nitrogen cut lowered carbon by 15.0% and grey water by 20%.

In the global GX context
Adds a farm-level, single-boundary case to the growing literature on agricultural Scope 3 and water-footprint accounting relevant to CSRD/ESRS E1-E3 and SBTi FLAG target-setting, though its single-region, single-season scope limits transferability.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Silage maize (Zea mays L.) is a key crop for the production of high-quality forage owing to its high biomass and dry-matter yield; however, achieving high yields requires intensive nitrogen fertilization and —in semi-arid regions— intensive irrigation, which results in a considerable environmental burden. In this study, the carbon footprint, soil-derived nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions and the green–blue–grey water footprint indicators of silage maize production were assessed within a single, consistent system boundary, based on a production inventory derived from the average input and output values compiled from 60 producers growing silage maize in the Battalgazi district of Malatya province during the 2025 production season. The analytical unit of the footprint calculation is one aggregated representative production inventory. Greenhouse-gas emissions were estimated using the IPCC (2006) Tier 1 method, and the water footprint indicators were calculated following the Water Footprint Assessment Manual (Hoekstra et al., 2011). The green component is an effective-precipitation-based green-water indicator and the blue component an applied-irrigation-water indicator; neither represents measured consumptive crop water use. The results are reported per hectare of production area and per tonne of fresh silage. On average, the production pattern received 320 kg N ha⁻¹ (500 kg urea + 500 kg DAP), 105 L diesel and 1,500 kWh of irrigation electricity per hectare, with a fresh silage yield of 57.5 t ha⁻¹. The total carbon footprint was 4,533.2 kg CO₂e ha⁻¹ (78.8 kg CO₂e t⁻¹). Estimated soil N₂O accounted for 38.9%, urea manufacture for 17.6% and irrigation electricity for 15.5% of the total. The total water footprint was 180.9 m³ t⁻¹ and was dominated by blue water (109.4 m³ t⁻¹; 60%), followed by grey water (55.7) and green water (15.9 m³ t⁻¹). Reducing total nitrogen by 20% through urea alone lowered the carbon footprint by 15.0% and the grey-water indicator by 20% (deterministic what-if calculation under constant-yield assumption). The findings indicate that nitrogen and irrigation management are the shared levers governing the environmental burden, specific to the 2025 season and the producer group examined.
