English

This study assesses carbon sequestration in Khung Bang Kachao, an urban green space near Bangkok, using field data from 12 plots and Random Forest modeling. Aboveground carbon sequestration reached 75,789.92 tCO2e in 2025, exceeding local emissions of 6,688.62 tCO2e, confirming it as a net carbon sink. The authors emphasize that vegetation composition, not just area size, drives sequestration in land-constrained urban settings.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This paper contributes to the global discourse on nature-based solutions and urban carbon accounting, relevant to frameworks like TCFD and ISSB that increasingly consider land-use and removals. It offers a replicable methodology for quantifying urban green space sequestration, useful for cities pursuing net-zero targets under the Paris Agreement.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Khung Bang Kachao, a riverine peninsula formed by a bend of the Chao Phraya River, functions as a vital “Green Lung” facing urban−industrial expansion within the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. This study assesses the carbon sequestration capacity of this urban green space and evaluates the area’s potential for carbon neutrality. Utilizing data from twelve monitoring plots across rehabilitation forests and home-garden agroforestry, the research integrated field measurements with Random Forest model predictions. Although there was a minor reduction in green space of 5.51 ha over the 2024−2025 period, the total aboveground carbon sequestration increased to 75,789.92 tCO2e in 2025. Local organizational emissions were calculated to be 6688.62 tCO2e, and the sequestration surplus of 7277.87 tCO2e/year confirms Khung Bang Kachao’s designation as a functional Net Carbon Sink. This disparity highlights that carbon management in urban green spaces with limited land availability relies more on the composition of vegetation than on its sheer size. Therefore, to attain long−term sustainability, a dual approach is essential: preserving rehabilitation forests as carbon sinks while optimizing agroforestry systems through species enrichment to maximize their sequestration capabilities, thereby providing a robust foundation for regional green infrastructure and national climate goals.
