English

This paper examines interactions between electricity markets and Direct Air Capture adoption using theory and stylized simulations. DAC can raise or lower electricity price volatility depending on technology type; cost or efficiency gains for the most efficient DAC tend to increase volatility. Higher CO2 prices boost deployment of the most efficient technology more than energy-intensive alternatives.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

DACはネガティブエミッション技術としてGX推進・カーボンプライシング設計と直結する。電力市場への影響評価は、日本でのDAC実装や電源構成政策を検討する際の基礎的知見となる。

In the global GX context

DAC sits at the center of global net-zero pathways and carbon removal policy. This work informs how carbon pricing and VRE-heavy grids interact with negative-emission deployment, relevant to ISSB-aligned transition planning and carbon market design.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Direct Air Capture (DAC) may become an important technology in the future, due to the need for negative CO₂ emissions. DAC operation is highly energy-intensive, and large-scale deployment is therefore likely to affect electricity markets. Meanwhile, electricity generation is becoming more volatile as the share of variable renewable energy (VRE) increases. This paper examines potential interactions between electricity markets and the adoption of DAC technologies. Combining theoretical analysis with stylized numerical simulations, we show that DAC adoption can increase or decrease electricity price volatility, depending on the type of DAC technology used. Cost reductions or improvements in energy efficiency for the most energy-efficient technology tend to increase price volatility, as they reduce the deployment of the more energy-intensive DAC technology, which is more likely to be shut down when prices are high. Furthermore, higher CO₂ prices lead to a greater increase in the deployment of the most energy-efficient technology than in the more energy-intensive alternative.
