English

This paper proposes a bi-level Stackelberg optimization framework for energy community operation, where an aggregator sets internal prices and members independently optimize PV, battery storage, and flexible demand. The upper level uses an evolutionary algorithm and lower levels are solved via LP/MILP, preserving privacy by exchanging only price signals and import/export schedules. Results show near-centralized economic performance and significant cost savings versus uncoordinated operation, with adaptable objectives to redistribute benefits.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Energy communities are expected to play a key role in the energy transition by supporting the deployment of renewable energy technologies. Their full potential can be unlocked through coordinated operation, typically managed by an aggregator. However, centralized approaches raise concerns regarding privacy, computational scalability, and the conflicting objectives of the community participants. To address these challenges, this work proposes a bi-level optimization framework for the operational management of energy communities. The formulation is based on a single-leader, multiple-followers Stackelberg game, in which the aggregator determines the internal electricity purchase and selling prices, while the community members independently optimize the operation of their local energy systems, including photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage, and flexible demand. The upper-level problem is solved using an evolutionary algorithm tailored for non-smooth problems, while the lower-level problems are solved to optimality using linear or mixed-integer linear programming. The framework supports both centralized and distributed implementations, preserving prosumer privacy by exchanging only price signals and electricity import/export schedules. The proposed approach is evaluated on several homogeneous and heterogeneous energy community configurations with realistic load profiles. The results show that the proposed framework achieves economic performance close to that of a centralized benchmark while significantly reducing the total operating cost compared with uncoordinated operation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the upper-level objective function can be adapted to improve the distribution of economic benefits among community members, highlighting the flexibility of the proposed optimization framework.
