Policy Briefing #65 v1 guides developers of carbon farming projects how to meet the "pollution prevention and control" requirements of CRCF Carbon Farming projects. To gain certification, these projects must adhere to the "do no significant harm" (DNSH) principle regarding chemical inputs and agricultural effluents. The briefing details how agroforestry inherently mitigates non-point source pollution. First, tree rows and deep root architectures exert a terracing effect and provide mechanical slope stabilization, drastically reducing wind and water erosion. Second, agroforestry continuously increases soil organic matter (SOM) and macro-porosity, enhancing the soil's water retention capacity. Third, deep-rooted trees function as a subsurface "safety net" and "nutrient pump". They intercept highly mobile agricultural nitrates, incorporating them into woody biomass and effectively preventing them from leaching into vulnerable groundwater aquifers.
