English

This study implements a circular water-management system at ADNOC Drilling's remote oil and gas camps, reclassifying MBR-treated effluent as a resource via a sprinkler system discharging to desert areas. The pilot eliminated wastewater trucking, saving ~AED 1.6M annually and cutting 502 tCO2e of Scope 3 emissions. Treated water was further validated to replace freshwater in drilling and hydraulic fracturing, demonstrating a scalable circular-economy approach.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Remote oil and gas drilling camps generate significant volumes of domestic wastewater that require environmentally responsible and cost-effective management. At ADNOC Drilling's onshore mobile camps, fly-office and centralized camps, wastewater is treated using Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, producing high-quality effluent. Traditionally, this treated water was managed as a waste stream and transported offsite by vacuum trucks for disposal, reaching volumes of approximately 10,000 US gallons per day from a single camp. Although compliant with environmental requirements, this practice resulted in substantial operating costs, increased fuel consumption, Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and logistical dependencies. This study presents the development and implementation of a circular water-management solution that reclassifies treated effluent as a beneficial resource. The methodology included assessment of the existing wastewater-management process, engineering integration of a sprinkler system with the sewage treatment plant (STP) outlet and controlled discharge across designated desert areas. Effluent quality was continuously monitored and verified against ADNOC discharge and irrigation standards, while regulatory assurance was strengthened through approval from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). The pilot project demonstrated annual savings of approximately AED 1.6 million and a reduction of 502 tCO2e in Scope 3 emissions by eliminating routine wastewater transportation Building on this success, STP-treated water from remote camps was further evaluated for use in drilling and hydraulic fracturing operations. Following laboratory testing, water-quality verification and technical assessments, pilot approval was obtained to replace freshwater in selected applications. The initiative transformed treated wastewater from a disposal liability into a valuable operational resource, reducing freshwater demand, transportation requirements, logistics-related emissions and overall environmental footprint. The project demonstrates a scalable circular-economy approach that enhances operational efficiency, resource conservation and sustainability performance within the oil and gas sector.
