English

Using OSeMOSYS, this study compares three power-sector pathways for Viet Nam to 2050: BAU, renewable expansion, and renewable expansion with coal phase-out. Solar and wind dominate both transition scenarios; coal phase-out cuts cumulative CO2 by 76.8% versus BAU while raising cumulative capital investment to about USD 1.46 trillion. Financing and system flexibility emerge as key constraints.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

ベトナムはJETPや日本のアジア・ゼロエミッション共同体(AZEC)支援の主要対象国であり、日本企業の電力・再エネ投資判断や脱炭素技術輸出の文脈で参照価値がある。

In the global GX context

Adds quantitative scenario evidence for emerging-economy coal phase-out, relevant to global transition-finance debates (JETP, just transition) and to ISSB/TCFD-aligned transition planning in Southeast Asia.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Viet Nam’s electricity transition requires coordinated planning for renewable expansion, coal phase-out and system flexibility. This study compares three pathways to 2050 using OSeMOSYS through MUIO: business as usual (BAU), renewable expansion (RE_EXP), and renewable expansion with coal phase-out (COAL_TR). The model represents one national region and 20 representative time slices, with results reported for 2026–2050. All scenarios share electricity demand and technology costs. RE_EXP removes minimum fossil generation requirements and requires wind, solar and biomass to supply at least 75% of domestic generation by 2050. COAL_TR additionally eliminates coal generation by 2050 and prohibits new coal capacity from 2031. Solar and wind dominate both transition pathways. Generation capacity reaches approximately 787 GW, compared with 479.7 GW under BAU. Annual direct CO₂ emissions in 2050 decrease from 718.6 Mt under BAU to 44.5 Mt in RE_EXP and 20.8 Mt in COAL_TR. Cumulative emissions fall by 72.5% and 76.8%, respectively. Cumulative undiscounted capital investment increases from USD 1,089.1 billion under BAU to USD 1,436.2 billion and USD 1,461.3 billion. These findings highlight the financing and flexibility requirements of decarbonisation. National aggregation, representative time slices and the absence of an assessed national pumped-hydro potential constraint limit conclusions about implementation feasibility.
