English
This paper analyzes Mexico's Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM) by comparing it with international markets like Chile, Brazil, the US, the UK, Scandinavia, South Korea, France, and China. Using a mixed-method approach, it evaluates supply reliability, price behavior, infrastructure investment, energy transition, and regulatory frameworks. The MEM has improved operational efficiency and reduced outages but faces challenges in price stability and investment attraction. International comparisons identify best practices to strengthen Mexico's electricity market structure, particularly for energy diversification and financial sustainability.

📄 Abstract(原文)
This article analyzes the performance of Mexico’s Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM from the Spanish acronym) through a comparison with international markets such as Chile, Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Scandinavian countries, South Korea, France, and China. Using a mixed method approach, it evaluates key criteria including supply reliability, price behavior, infrastructure investment, energy transition, and regulatory frameworks. Although the MEM has improved operational efficiency and reduced service interruptions, it still faces challenges in price stability and investment attraction. The international comparison helps identify best practices that could strengthen the structure and design of the Mexican electricity market, particularly in terms of energy diversification and financial sustainability. Additionally, the study highlights limitations in the implementation of complementary mechanisms such as ancillary services and capacity markets. Finally, recommendations are provided to improve regulatory frameworks, enhance investment signals, and promote a more balanced, efficient, and competitive energy transition within Mexico’s national power system.
