English

This paper compares management models of agricultural integrated entities across the EU, US, and Ukraine (cooperatives, NGCs, contract farming, agroholdings). Ukrainian agricultural service cooperatives show a structural gap: 1,382 registered but only 381 active (-38.5%). It identifies four wartime adaptive governance areas and strategic vectors for aligning Ukrainian agribusiness management with CSDDD, CAP, and the European Green Deal.

In the global GX context

This contributes to global disclosure scholarship by linking agricultural value-chain governance to CSDDD and CAP compliance, offering a non-EU, conflict-affected case of institutional adaptation. It is relevant to debates on Scope 3 supply-chain due diligence in agrifood systems.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Introduction. The current stage of global economic development is characterized by the transformation of agrifood markets, climate volatility, geopolitical instability, and the proliferation of Industry 4.0 technologies. Under these conditions, autonomous agricultural producers face critical barriers, which actualizes inter-sectoral cooperation and integration as an imperative for competitiveness. For Ukraine, studying the management of integrated structures is of particular importance due to the specifics of its bipolar agricultural structure (dominance of agroholdings alongside weak small-scale farming), the devastating impact of full-scale war on logistics and infrastructure, and the necessity to harmonize agricultural policy with the requirements of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the European Green Deal, and corporate sustainability due diligence directives (CSDDD). Purpose. The purpose of the article is to perform a comprehensive comparative analysis of foreign and domestic management models of integrated entities in the agricultural sector, systemise their structural and functional features and adaptive responses to modern shocks, and substantiate conceptual foundations for the institutional transformation of Ukrainian agribusiness management in the context of post-war recovery and European integration. Materials and methods. The study materials include fundamental works of domestic and foreign scholars in institutional economics, theory of the firm, transaction costs, management, and agricultural policy, regulatory acts of Ukraine and the EU (in particular, EU Directive 2019/633 and CSDDD EU 2024/1760), as well as statistical data on the functioning of agricultural service cooperatives (ASCs) and agroholdings for 2020–2024. In the research process, the following methods were applied: systemic and comparative analysis (to compare European, American, and Ukrainian management systems), Value Chain Governance theory, analytical generalization and grouping (to assess the dynamics of the ASC sector), and institutional and structural mapping (to substantiate the transformation directions of corporate and cooperative governance). Results. The basic management systems of agricultural integrated entities in global and domestic practice (the two-tier cooperative model of the EU, new generation cooperatives NGC and contract farming in the USA, territorial agroclusters, and Ukrainian agroholdings) are systematized. The dynamics of Ukrainian ASCs for 2020–2024 were analyzed, revealing a deep structural gap: despite a formal increase in registered cooperatives to 1,382 units, the number of active ones decreased by 38.5% (to 381 units, or 27.6% of the total). Four key areas of adaptive governance of domestic agribusiness under war conditions were identified: logistics diversification and multimodal infrastructure development, crop rotation optimization in favor of high-margin oilseeds and legumes, decentralization of operational management using grain bag storage technologies, and the expansion of deep processing and bioenergy projects. Strategic vectors for management modernization in Ukraine were substantiated: aligning corporate governance with EU transparency standards and CSDDD, developing hybrid partnerships between agroholdings and small farmers, state support for Producer Organisations (POs), and end-to-end digital integration with the European TRACES platform. Further research in this area. In further research, it is proposed to focus on developing formal mechanisms for assessing the economic efficiency of hybrid contract models between agroholdings and small farms, creating practical compliance tools for implementing the European CSDDD directive into corporate governance systems of domestic enterprises, and substantiating methodological foundations for monetizing environmental services and carbon credits by Ukrainian integrated agricultural entities.
