English

Using EKC framework and system GMM on 2000–2023 data from 53 African countries, this study examines how digitalisation, the knowledge economy, and government spending shape energy transition. Digitalisation initially impedes but eventually improves ET at higher levels; government spending interacts positively with digitalisation, while the knowledge economy only strengthens the digitalisation–ET link beyond a threshold. Effects vary by income group and urban/rural context.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

This adds to global transition-finance and just-transition scholarship by quantifying how digital infrastructure and public spending jointly enable energy transition in low- and middle-income economies—contexts often underrepresented in TCFD/ISSB-centric disclosure research. It informs how development finance and country-level policy interact with corporate decarbonisation pathways in emerging markets.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Energy transition in Africa aims to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, enhancing sustainable development. By fostering access to clean, affordable energy, it supports economic growth, climate action, and social equity across the continent, promoting a greener future. This study examines the interplay between digitalisation, the knowledge economy, and government spending in facilitating energy transition (ET). The paper employs the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework and data spanning 2000 to 2023 from 53 African countries. Our empirical approach utilises system GMM methods, then FE-2SLS and IV-2SLS for robustness checks. Results show that digitalisation initially impedes energy transition, but eventually improves it at higher digitalisation levels, lending credence to the EKC hypothesis. However, this effect is not uniform; it varies significantly by income group and geographical context (urban/rural). Interestingly, the government expenditure interacts with digitalisation to positively influence ET in Africa. However, the knowledge economy does not exert an immediate positive moderating effect. Instead, it must achieve a certain threshold level before it can effectively strengthen the relationship between digitalization and ET. The findings suggest that synergistic policies promoting digitalisation and strategic government investments can significantly enhance a sustainable energy future. Also improving the knowledge economy through education and research investments can accelerate technological innovation and adoption of renewable energy sources.
