English

This study examines onboard carbon capture (OCC) technology for naval vessels, focusing on reducing exhaust smoke emissions. While safe application is feasible, significant engineering, logistical, and economic hurdles remain. Vessel size, operational profile, machinery capacity, and available space are key feasibility factors.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Onboard carbon capture is gaining attention as a transitional decarbonization lever for shipping under IMO and EU ETS frameworks. This paper's focus on naval applications limits direct relevance to commercial disclosure, but its engineering constraints analysis informs broader OCCS feasibility debates.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The concept of onboard carbon capture (OCC) is based on technology which captures the carbon on board the vessel before the CO2 is emitted to the atmosphere through the exhaust. While it offers flexibility and retrofit potential, some significant engineering, logistical, and economic hurdles remain. Studies show that the technology can be applied safely on vessels, but it still needs to be further developed and optimized for maritime use and integration. Key factors that affect the technical feasibility of onboard carbon capture for a dedicated vessel are the size, operational profile and hull pattern, the machinery capacity for power and heat production, and the space available. This study explores these technologies for naval applications, specifically to reduce smoke emissions from exhaust systems.
