English

This chapter reviews carbon farming as climate-smart agriculture linking farm prosperity with soil carbon sequestration. It covers technologies (conservation tillage, cover crops, soil amendments, agroforestry, integrated livestock), agricultural carbon markets including credits, MRV and transaction costs, and economic assessments of adoption across small- and large-scale systems. It also examines legal frameworks needed to scale carbon farming, especially in developing contexts.

In the global GX context

Globally, carbon farming sits at the intersection of agricultural carbon markets, soil-based removals, and emerging disclosure rules (CSRD, ISSB, SBTi FLAG). This chapter's synthesis of MRV methods, transaction costs, and adoption economics informs how crediting standards and corporate supply-chain climate targets treat soil carbon, particularly for smallholder systems in developing countries.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Carbon farming can be a potential climate-smart agriculture that links agricultural prosperity with sustainable management of the environment. Carbon farming has the potential to counter the harmful effects of climate change, enhance the quality of agricultural productivity, soils, along with the economy of farmers through the enhancement of the soil&s;s reservoir of organic carbon. This chapter explored the development of carbon farming regarding the need for quality soils in carbon sequestration to promote sustainable agricultural economies. This chapter compiles an update on the study concerning the biological cycle of soil carbon. In addition, the carbon farming technologies that are thoroughly discussed in the chapter include conservation tillage, use of cover crops, soil amendments, agroforestry, and integrated livestock systems. The agricultural carbon markets that include carbon credits, methods of measurement, reporting, verification, along with the transaction’s costs involving the marketing outcome are also described. The economic assessments regarding the adoption of carbon farming include the cost of adoption, earning capacity, and risk considerations that exist between small-scale, large-scale agricultural systems. The legal framework to promote the expansion of carbon farming globally, especially within the developing context, is also explained.
