English

This study compares carbon management and sustainability performance of Schiphol, Heathrow, and Fraport airports (2023-2025) using document analysis. Scope 3 emissions increased across all three, offsetting reductions in Scope 1 and 2. Reporting boundary differences limit comparability.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

日本のGX文脈において

日本の空港運営会社や関連企業にとって、Scope 3排出量の増加が総排出量削減を阻む構造は示唆的。SSBJ開示やサプライチェーン排出量の管理に応用できる。

In the global GX context

This paper provides empirical evidence on airport carbon management, highlighting the challenge of Scope 3 emissions in value chains. Relevant for global disclosure frameworks like ISSB and CSRD, especially for transport infrastructure sectors.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Airports are increasingly expected to reduce aviation’s environmental impacts while managing energy, operations, transport, supply chains and stakeholder relations in an integrated manner. This study compares the carbon management practices and sustainability performance of Royal Schiphol Group, Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited and Fraport AG during 2023–2025 using document analysis and a comparative multiple-case design. Data from annual reports, sustainability disclosures and carbon-footprint tables were harmonised and assessed alongside reported organisational and operational practices. Scope 3 emissions increased by 10.8% at Schiphol, 3.5% at Heathrow and 0.9% at Fraport, while Heathrow reduced gross Scope 1 emissions by 16.9% and Fraport reduced market-based Scope 2 emissions by 50.9%. Despite improvements in directly managed areas, total carbon footprints did not decline because value-chain emissions increased. Differences in reporting boundaries and category definitions also limit direct performance comparisons. The findings show that airport performa
