The Mining Policy Principles (November 2025) establish a set of minimum standards — effectively red lines — for mining governance in Australia. Developed collaboratively by over a dozen Australian civil society organisations, the Principles draw on decades of collective experience across mining policy, environmental protection, First Nations rights, transparency, and climate change. Organised under seven categories — First Nations rights and cultural heritage; community rights in decision-making; environmental protection and social impact assessment; mining legacies; regional planning; corporate and government accountability and integrity; and critical minerals strategies — the Principles apply to all mining, not just critical or energy transition minerals. They define the threshold below which mining cannot be considered responsible, and are intended to inform legislation, regulation, and community advocacy across the full lifecycle of mining projects in Australia.
