A four-layer blockchain–IoT architecture was deployed at a 100 kWp PV plant run by an agricultural SME in Sardinia, combining Shelly smart meters, Raspberry Pi units, and Hyperledger Fabric chaincode. Over roughly six months it recorded 42,853.98 kWh and 11.87 tCO2e of on-chain certified carbon credits, with automated recovery and anomaly logging validated in production. Field challenges such as panel space limits and unstable Wi-Fi are reported.

In the global GX context

Provides rare production-grade empirical evidence for blockchain-based MRV of carbon credits, relevant to ISSB/CSRD assurance debates on data provenance and to voluntary market integrity discussions where automated, tamper-evident measurement is increasingly demanded.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Introduction Carbon credit certification for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) depends on reliable, automated mechanisms that connect measured renewable energy production to verifiable emission-reduction records. Existing approaches are primarily conceptual and lack empirical validation in production environments. Methods This paper presents an implementation and validation of a four-layer blockchain–Internet of Things (IoT) architecture at a 100 kWp photovoltaic (PV) installation operated by an agricultural SME in Marrubiu (OR), Sardinia, Italy. The system integrates Shelly Pro 3 EM smart energy meters, two Raspberry Pi data collection units, and a Hyperledger Fabric (HLF) permissioned blockchain running the ControllerContract chaincode. Results Deployed on 31 October 2025, the system remained deployed throughout the observation period, with automated recovery from connectivity interruptions, and recorded 42,853.98 kWh of exchanged energy and 11.87 tCO 2 e of blockchain-certified carbon credits (credits whose computation and provenance are recorded immutably on-chain, pending validation by an accredited voluntary market body) over the period from 1 November 2025 to 26 April 2026. As of 9 August 2026, the blockchain ledger contained 70,620 blocks. During normal operation, the combined design rate was 384 blocks per day (288 from data collection and 96 from the certification controller). Discussion The deployment demonstrates the architectural validity of the framework across all four layers, illustrates anomaly detection with retransmission logging in production, and reports field challenges not anticipated in the original design, including electrical panel space constraints and Wi-Fi signal instability in an agricultural setting.
