English
Waste valorization is typically assessed via resource recovery and carbon benefits, overlooking contaminants inherited from feedstocks or generated in processing. This viewpoint proposes 'contaminant budgeting' as a complement to carbon accounting, tracking contaminant inputs and their partitioning across recovered products, residuals, water, air, and transformed fractions. PFAS and microplastics in biosolids illustrate that recovery may redistribute rather than eliminate contaminants.

In the global GX context
As ISSB/CSRD disclosure expands beyond carbon to broader pollution and circularity metrics, this paper argues that carbon accounting alone can mask contaminant trade-offs in waste-derived products. It adds a conceptual building block for integrated environmental accounting in global disclosure scholarship.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Waste valorization is increasingly assessed through resource recovery, waste diversion, and carbon benefits, but these metrics may overlook contaminants inherited from waste feedstocks or generated during processing. This viewpoint article proposes contaminant budgeting as a complementary approach to carbon accounting, tracking contaminant inputs and their partitioning among recovered products, residual solids, water, air emissions, and transformed fractions. Cases involving PFAS and microplastics in biosolids illustrate that resource recovery may redistribute contaminants rather than eliminating them. Integrating contaminant budgeting with resource and carbon accounting can strengthen the environmental assessment and sustainability of waste-derived products.
