English

This study applies a reproducible toolkit—word-frequency and keyword-in-context analysis, readability scoring, numeric-density and assurance-language checks, year-on-year cross-tabulation—to environmental disclosures from ten oil, gas, and energy firms. It identifies six recurring patterns: missing Scope 3 definitions, context-free reduction figures with inconsistent base years, up to 47-fold market- vs location-based gaps, and narrative-over-numbers treatment of renewables. The authors avoid claiming intent, but show gaps recur across formats, auditors, and countries and surface through careful reading and basic arithmetic.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD and SEC climate rules push assurance and comparability, this work offers a low-cost forensic method for regulators and auditors to test whether narrative claims match reported numbers. Its cross-country recurrence finding strengthens the case for standardized Scope 3 and market-vs-location disclosure requirements globally.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Sustainability reports for oil and gas corporations have ballooned to hundreds of pages. This study observes ten oil, gas, and energy companies that published official environmental disclosure and applies a reproducible set of tools word-frequency and keyword-in-context analysis, readability scoring, numeric-density and assurance-language checks, year-on-year cross-tabulation to analyze their reports, ESG data books, ratings, and/or regulatory filings. Research finds six cross-cutting patterns. Scope 3 emissions and what they actually comprise are missing consistently in half the reports. Headline “reduction” figures are context-free and base years vary. Market-based versus location-based emissions vary up to 47-fold with no indication which or both are reported. Narratives trump numbers when it comes to renewable energy. It is uncertain that the gaps reflect intent. All the figures are company-published and guaranteed true. But notice that the gaps recur across formats, auditors, and countries, and in most cases, the faults show when you read carefully and do basic arithmetic.
