English

This study estimates the digital carbon footprint of tourism businesses — indirect emissions from online booking, digital marketing, social media, and cloud computing — using activity-based calculations with literature emission coefficients. Scenario estimates and source-based sensitivity analysis show this neglected emission source is a meaningful part of tourism's environmental impact. Adopting green economy principles can cut these emissions while improving sustainability performance and competitiveness.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD push Scope 3 and value-chain transparency, digital and cloud-related indirect emissions remain poorly standardized. This paper offers a tourism-sector activity-based framing that could inform disclosure guidance for service industries.

📄 Abstract(原文)

This study investigates the digital carbon footprint in the tourism industry and evaluates its implications within the context of the green economy. As tourism businesses increasingly depend on digital technologies, including online booking systems, digital marketing, social media platforms, and cloud computing, these operations create indirect energy demand that contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Drawing on emission coefficients reported in the literature, the study presents illustrative calculations to estimate the carbon emissions associated with common digital activities in tourism. It further discusses how adopting green economy principles can help reduce these emissions while improving the sustainability performance and environmental reputation of tourism businesses. The findings suggest that the digital carbon footprint represents an important yet frequently neglected component of the tourism industry's environmental impact. Addressing this hidden source of emissions can enhance both environmental sustainability and the long-term competitiveness of tourism enterprises. The study contributes to the literature by providing an activity-based quantitative assessment of selected digital operations in tourism and by integrating scenario-based estimates and source-based sensitivity analysis with the broader green economy framework.
