English

This study tests co-combustion coal fly ash (CCAFA) as a partial cement replacement and co-combustion bottom ash (CCABA) as a fine-aggregate replacement in concrete. CCAFA alone cut GWP but lowered flexural strength, while CCABA alone impaired strength due to porosity. The combined mix (30% CCAFA, 50% CCABA) reached 4.75 MPa flexural strength with GWP of 254.92 kg CO2-eq/m³ and the highest strength-to-GWP efficiency, meeting Indonesian heavy-traffic pavement requirements.

In the global GX context

As ISSB/CSRD push Scope 3 disclosure into construction supply chains, quantifying the GWP reduction of cement substitutes alongside mechanical performance offers a replicable efficiency metric (strength-to-GWP index) for embodied-carbon accounting in building materials. The paper's Indonesian code linkage illustrates how national standards can anchor low-carbon material adoption.

📄 Abstract(原文)

The increasing adoption of coal – agro-waste co-combustion in thermal power plants has generated significant quantities of co-combustion coal fly ash (CCAFA) and co-combustion coal bottom ash (CCABA), creating new challenges for sustainable ash management. Simultaneously, the concrete industry faces growing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with Portland cement production. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing CCAFA as a partial replacement for Portland Composite Cement (PCC) and CCABA as a partial replacement for natural fine aggregate to develop low-carbon concrete with enhanced mechanical and environmental performance. Six concrete mixtures were prepared, comprising one control mixture and five modified mixtures incorporating 15 – 30 wt.% CCAFA and/or 50 wt.% CCABA. Beam specimens (100 × 100 × 400 mm) were water-cured for 28 days and evaluated through flexural strength testing in accordance with ASTM C78. Environmental performance was assessed using Global Warming Potential (GWP), while the overall sustainability of each mixture was quantified using the Flexural Strength-to-GWP Efficiency Index (IFS). The results revealed that CCAFA used alone reduced flexural strength but substantially decreased GWP because of lower cement consumption, whereas CCABA alone significantly impaired flexural performance owing to its porous structure and high-water absorption. However, the combined incorporation of CCAFA and CCABA produced a pronounced synergistic effect. The optimum mixture, containing 30 wt.% CCAFA and 50 wt.% CCABA (MIX 5), achieved the highest flexural strength of 4.75 MPa, corresponding to a Strength Activity Index of 149.84%, while reducing GWP to 254.92 kg CO₂-eq/m³ and attaining the highest IFS value of 0.0186 MPa·m³/kg CO₂-eq. Furthermore, MIX 5 satisfied the Indonesian flexural strength requirement for heavy-traffic rigid pavements, demonstrating that hybrid utilization of co-combustion ash can simultaneously enhance structural performance, reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainable resource utilization in concrete production.
