English

Proposes an integrated FSM-PSM-dynamic-geomechanical workflow to mature saline aquifer CO2 storage leads, moving beyond depleted reservoirs. It jointly assesses injectivity, pressure build-up and management, geomechanical limits, containment, and long-term plume migration. Applied to offshore Peninsular Malaysia, it offers a practical screening-to-feasibility framework informed by lessons from Snøhvit, Salah, Gorgon, Quest, Aquistore, and Decatur.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) is increasingly recognized as a critical solution for managing CO2 emissions from gas fields with high CO2 content, as well as from other industrial and energy-related sources. While depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs have traditionally been considered as attractive CO2 storage targets due to their known trap configuration, available subsurface data, and proven containment history, they may be constrained by limited storage capacity, potential well integrity risks, and injectivity limitations. In contrast, saline aquifers offer significantly larger regional storage potential, making them a strategic option for long-term CO2 storage development in Malaysia and worldwide. However, saline aquifer storage sites are commonly associated with greater subsurface uncertainty such as limited well control, poorly constrained reservoir continuity, and higher uncertainty in pressure propagation and plume migration behavior. These challenges require an exploration type evaluation approach supported by basin to subregional scale characterization and modelling. The key challenge in saline aquifer CO2 storage is not only to evaluate storage volume and characterize the reservoir, but to confirm that the site can be safely and practically developed. Existing CO2 storage projects show that: reservoir injectivity and pressure management can be major challenging factors. For example, Snøhvit faced reduced injection performance due to pressure build-up issues, while there were geomechanical and pressure-related challenges in Salah project. Other projects such as Gorgon, Quest, Aquistore, and Decatur also demonstrate the importance of the correct prediction of reservoir injectivity. Therefore, evaluation of CO2 storage leads should integrate reservoir and seal characterization together with pressure management evaluation, plume migration, and geomechanics. It must assess injectivity, pressure build-up, pressure management requirements, geomechanical limits, containment, and long-term plume migration risk, as these factors may highly control the practical storage capacity and development feasibility of the lead.
