English

An open-source digital-twin kernel adds an energy model, hourly grid-emission factors, and a two-step nitrification N₂O overlay to the validated ASM1/Takács benchmark without disturbing its nitrogen balance. It reproduces the official bsm2-python implementation (effluent index within 0.54%) and runs 18.4× faster with numba. A 40-day scan of 261 setpoints yields 199 feasible points and an 11-point Pareto front; higher aeration at high nitrate setpoints cuts the N₂O emission factor from 0.79% to 0.58%.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

Wastewater utilities are a material but under-disclosed source of Scope 1 N₂O and Scope 2 grid emissions; this work offers a reproducible, open tool for net-carbon optimisation that can feed ISSB/CSRD-aligned emissions accounting and transition planning for water infrastructure.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Wastewater treatment plants emit greenhouse gases, yet the official IWA benchmark platform bsm2-python has no process greenhouse-gas model, so water-quality–energy optimisation ignores direct N₂O emissions and can push operation into high-emission regions. We present an open-source plant-level digital-twin kernel that couples an energy model and an hourly grid-emission-factor module with a two-step nitrification N₂O overlay superimposed on the validated ASM1/Takács model without perturbing its nitrogen balance. The kernel reproduces the official implementation: the three energy terms agree exactly and the effluent quality index differs by 0.54%. Compiled with numba it runs at 16507 steps/s, 18.4 times faster. A 40-day scan of 261 setpoint combinations yields 199 distinct feasible operating points and an 11-point Pareto front; at high nitrate setpoints more aeration lowers the N₂O emission factor from 0.79% to 0.58%.
