English

This paper tests whether green bond prices carry information about physical clean-energy output, using the data-centre electricity demand surge as a stress test. Using a time-varying parameter VAR, endogenous break tests and state-dependent local projections on monthly 2011-2026 data, it finds that information from wind and solar output fell to negligible levels at a mid-2019 break and did not recover in the generative-AI era. Green bond returns became dominated by financial conditions (Treasury yields and credit spreads rising from 7% to 62% of explained variation), while AI-era data-centre load shocks raise gas-fired generation but not green asset prices. The authors argue green bond prices cannot currently signal physical clean-energy conditions, strengthening the case for outcome-based disclosure, interconnection reform and contracted clean procurement.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters

In the global GX context

For global disclosure scholarship, this paper challenges the assumption that labelled green finance prices reflect real-economy decarbonization, supporting the ISSB/CSRD push toward outcome-based and transition-plan disclosure. It also links AI-driven electricity demand growth to gas lock-in, a live issue for transition finance and grid policy.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Energy transition strategies assign labelled green finance a policy function: to lower the cost of capital for clean generation. For green bond prices to support that function as a market signal, they must carry information about physical clean-energy output. This paper tests whether they do, using the surge in data-centre electricity demand as a demanding test. Monthly green bond, clean energy and ESG index returns are combined with US generation by fuel, a load-based proxy for data-centre demand, and interest-rate and credit-spread controls over January 2011 to February 2026. A time-varying parameter VAR, endogenous break tests and state-dependent local projections yield three findings. First, the information that green bond returns receive from wind and solar output, modest before 2019, fell to negligible levels at an estimated break in mid-2019 and did not recover in the generative-AI era. Second, green bond returns became dominated by financial conditions: the share explained by Treasury yields and credit spreads rose from 7 to 62 percent. Third, data-centre load shocks raise gas-fired generation significantly more in the AI era, while green asset prices do not respond. Green bond prices therefore cannot presently be relied on as a signal of physical clean-energy conditions, strengthening the case for outcome-based disclosure, interconnection reform and contracted clean procurement.
