BECCS: An Important Option for Climate Protection: BECCS technologies are nearing market readiness and can build on the existing bioenergy system. With appropriate plant expansions, BECCS can capture up to 30 million tons of CO2 per year from biogenic waste and residues in Germany. To achieve net-negative effects with BECCS, sustainably produced biomass must be used and specifically allocated to energy sectors that are difficult to decarbonize. Equally necessary are efficient capture technologies and the establishment of permanent storage systems for CO2. To enable synergies with sustainable land use and to manage competition for limited biomass with other CO2 removal technologies (e.g., biochar) and other biomass uses (e.g., in the chemical sector), appropriate policy frameworks must be established.
