English
An activity-based GHG assessment of a 4-acre university research farm in Mansehra, Pakistan, using IPCC emission factors. Total footprint was 1.275 t CO2eq/yr, dominated by grid electricity in the mushroom house, then nitrogen fertilizer for wheat and maize; solar drip irrigation yielded zero operational CO2. Nitrogen-use efficiency, crop-specific fertilizer management and renewable energy are the main mitigation levers.

📝 gxceed 編集解説 — Why this matters
In the global GX context
Adds a small-scale, activity-based agricultural carbon accounting case to the global disclosure literature, relevant to Scope 3 Category 1 (purchased goods) and land-sector inventory methods under IPCC guidelines. It illustrates how institutional farms can quantify and target mitigation, though its scale limits generalizability.

📄 Abstract(原文)
Agricultural land within institutional campuses can generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through soil nitrogen transformations, flooded rice cultivation, fertilizer use, irrigation and electricity consumption. This study assessed the carbon footprint of the approximately 4-acre (32-kanal) Hazara University Research Farm in Mansehra, Pakistan. The farm is used primarily for academic experimentation and student research rather than commercial production. Crop and input data were obtained from the Agriculture Department, field observations and departmental records, and converted to carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq) using IPCC-based emission factors. The estimated agricultural footprint was 1.2750 t CO2eq yr-1. The largest agricultural emission source was the mushroom house (0.2375 t CO2eq yr-1) because of grid electricity use, followed by wheat (0.2341 t CO2eq yr-1) and maize (0.1873 t CO2eq yr-1), where emissions were associated primarily with nitrogen fertilizer. Rice contributed 0.0325 t CO2eq yr-1 from methane associated with flooded cultivation. Solar-powered drip irrigation and the absence of diesel use for the assessed irrigation activity resulted in zero calculated operational CO2 emissions. The results indicate that nitrogen-use efficiency, crop-specific fertilizer management, water management and renewable energy integration are the main agricultural mitigation opportunities. Soil organic carbon stocks and changes were not directly measured; therefore, the study quantifies soil-related emission pathways rather than soil-carbon sequestration.
