English

Two global energy system models (TIAM-UCL, MESSAGEix) are compared under harmonised Paris-aligned scenarios to assess hydrogen trade. Both project a more distributed, regionally integrated market than today's centralised fossil fuel trade: intra-regional pipeline trade reaches 3-22 EJ/yr by 2050, while international liquid hydrogen trade stays limited at 1-6 EJ/yr. The authors find a systematic mismatch between national trade ambitions and least-cost pathways, with most regions able to self-supply via domestic production and intra-regional trade.

In the global GX context

As ISSB/TCFD disclosure increasingly covers transition plans, this paper challenges the widely assumed scale of international hydrogen trade embedded in many corporate and national transition narratives. It offers global readers a harmonised multi-model benchmark for stress-testing hydrogen procurement assumptions in net-zero pathways.

📄 Abstract(原文)

Abstract

Hydrogen trade is widely expected to play a central role in global decarbonisation strategies, yet the market’s future scale and structure remain highly uncertain. Here, we assess hydrogen trade development in Paris-aligned pathways through a harmonised scenario intercomparison of two independent global energy system models, TIAM-UCL and MESSAGEix. Despite their distinct structures, both models produce consistent patterns of hydrogen system and trade developments, projecting a more distributed and regionally integrated hydrogen trade market than today’s centralised fossil fuel ones. Intra-regional hydrogen pipeline trade averages 3–22 EJ/yr by 2050 across scenarios, while international liquid hydrogen trade emerges later and remains limited at 1–6 EJ/yr, implying most regions could achieve self-sufficiency through domestic production and intra-regional trade alone. We identify a systematic mismatch between hydrogen trade ambitions and least-cost pathways, with national planning placing disproportionate focus on international rather than intra-regional trade. Our findings indicate that hydrogen trade will be essential for cost-effective decarbonisation, but it is likely to remain more regionally concentrated, with international liquid trade developing more slowly and at a smaller scale than policy and industry narratives suggest. Realising its potential will require faster, coordinated infrastructure deployment and closer alignment of national strategies with least-cost decarbonisation pathways.
