This study models multiple trade scenarios to assess how international trade in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) affects emission compliance costs and the geographic distribution of mitigation burden. It finds that CDR trade lowers compliance costs in the Global North while shifting mitigation activity and resource pressures to the Global South. The work highlights equity and burden-sharing questions in designing international carbon-removal markets.
