📄 Abstract(原文)
Abstract Renewable-energy adoption is increasingly recognised as a potential means of improving energy reliability, strengthening enterprise performance, and supporting inclusive economic development in energy-constrained economies. However, evidence on its economic effects in Nigeria remains limited, particularly at the sub-national level. This study examines the determinants and economic effects of renewable-energy adoption among households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in selected Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Lagos State, Nigeria. Using cross-sectional survey data from 302 respondents , the study employs a two-stage empirical strategy. First, binary Logit and Probit models are used to identify the socioeconomic, informational, infrastructural, and energy-related factors associated with renewable-energy adoption. Second, Instrumental Variable Ordinary Least Squares (IV-OLS) and Control Function (CF) models are applied to address potential endogeneity arising from non-random adoption, omitted variables, and reverse causality. This approach distinguishes the factors influencing adoption from the estimated economic consequences associated with renewable-energy use.The results show that education, income, renewable-energy awareness, information exposure, electricity-supply conditions, and urban residence are positively associated with the likelihood of adoption, whereas greater distance from renewable-energy vendors or installers is negatively associated with adoption. After accounting for potential endogeneity, renewable-energy adoption is associated with statistically significant improvements in SME productivity, employment, household welfare, and revenue performance . The estimated coefficient for SME productivity is 0.312 under the IV-OLS specification and 0.298 under the Control Function specification , indicating a positive and substantively meaningful relationship between adoption and enterprise productivity. The Control Function results further suggest that endogeneity is relevant to the adoption decision and should be considered when estimating its economic effects. Overall, the findings indicate that renewable energy should be viewed not only as an environmental or energy-access intervention but also as a potential productive investment capable of improving enterprise performance and household economic welfare. The study therefore recommends policies that combine affordable renewable-energy finance with improved information dissemination, expanded installation and maintenance networks, and targeted support for energy-constrained households and SMEs. Nevertheless, the causal interpretation of the estimated effects remains conditional on the validity and strength of the instruments, the plausibility of the exclusion restrictions, and the robustness of the econometric specifications.
